Facendo l'insegnante di lingua cinese ho potuto portare i miei studenti, persino quelli più restii, a preferire di trasferire il significato di un brano dal cinese in italiano anzicchè a tradurre una frase alla volta, parola dopo parola. I testi da noi utilizzati erano particolarmente adatti a studenti di vari livelli.
As a teacher of Chinese language I was able to bring my students, even the most reluctant ones, to prefer to transfer the meaning of a passage from Chinese to Italian rather than translate a sentence at a time, word by word. The texts we used were particularly suitable for students of various levels.

Il mio interesse per l'arte e per le città d'arte m'aveva portata, sin dagli inizi, quando frequentavo un corso per diventare guida turistica, a tradurre la guida di Milano dal cinese in italiano. Questo per mettere alla prova la mia abilità quando ero appena uscita dalla scuola di cinese.
My interest in art and in art cities had led me, from the beginning, when I attended a course to become a tour guide, to translate the Milan guide from Chinese into Italian. This was to test my ability when I just ended Chinese courses.
Tornando indietro nel tempo, non ancora laureata, avevo trovato lavoro come insegnante di russo, facendomi passare per "padrelingua" russa. Questo grazie al mio cognome (Kozák) che, per appunto, significa "cosacco". Per la lingua problemi non c'erano, ero appena tornata da Mosca dove non mi prendevano più per straniera.
Going back in time, not yet graduated, I had found a job as a Russian teacher, introducing myself as Russian "father tongue". This is thanks to my surname (Kozák) which, in fact, means "Cossack". There were no problems with the language, I had just returned from Moscow where they no longer took me for a foreigner.
Tornando ancor più indietro mi vengono in mente le notti passate a tradurre dalla mia madrelingua ungherese in italiano. Allora frequentavo l'università e il guadagno ricavato dalle traduzioni mi aveva permesso di mantenermi durante gli studi.
Going even further back I can think of the nights spent translating from my Hungarian mother tongue into Italian. At that time I was attending university and the gains made by translations allowed me to maintain myself during my studies.
Ho avuto molte soddisfazioni. Per esempio ho partecipato come
inteprete ad un convegno sulla musica colta ungherese mentre ero in
stato avanzato di gravidanza. Tutti erano gentili con me e il lavoro era
consono alle mie origini in quanto nella mia famiglia numerosa tutti
quanti suonavamo almeno uno strumento.
I had a lot of satisfaction. For
example, I participated as an interpreter in a conference on Hungarian
classic music while I was in an advanced state of pregnancy. Everyone was kind to me and the work was in line with my origins as in my large family we all played at least one instrument.
Sin dall'adolescenza mi buttavo nelle conversazioni con amici stranieri con i pochi mezzi a mia disposizione. Diceva mia sorella: "Tu iniziavi una frase, ti giravi verso di me per chiedere qualche parola in inglese e poi continuavi imperterrita." Ricordo che non sapendo dire "piove" in inglese, mi ero arrangiata a dire "The clouds are crying".
Since I was a teenager I used to talk to foreign friends with the few means available to me. My sister said: "You started a sentence, you turned to me to ask a few words in English and then continued undaunted." I remember not being able to say "it rains" in English, I had arranged to say "The clouds are crying".
La comunicazione verbale è riservata all'essere umano e l'ambiente famigliare lascia un segno non indifferente. L'essere la cocca di papà mi era facile fin quando, a mo' di Sheherezade da "Mille e una notte" riuscivo a catturare l'attenzione. E' per non perdere questo privilegio che fin da piccola avevo sviluppato l'arte di raccontare storie.
Verbal communication is reserved for the human being and the family environment leaves a considerable mark. Being Daddy's nock was easy for me until, like Sheherezade from "A Thousand and One Nights", I was able to capture attention. It is in order not to lose this privilege that I developed the art of telling stories when I was a child.
