Solstizio d'Inverno / Winter Solstice

Solstizio d'Inverno / Winter Solstice

The winter solstice is one of the 24 solar terms formulated first, with an annual calendar of 12 months plus 21/23 days, in the Gregorian calendar it falls between 21 and 23 December. The ancients believed that from the longest day of winter (yin) the yang (the sky) would rise and that that day heaven and earth would gradually begin the next cycle. This is why they considered it the day of peace.

The winter solstice is an important solar term in the Chinese luni solar calendar and a traditional festival, also known as "冬至 一 阳 生" 'dōngzhì yī yáng shēng' (the Sun is just born), the shortest day, the longest night . After the winter solstice, the sun slowly moves to the Tropic of Cancer, the day gradually lengthens so in ancient times it was said that "the winter solstice is a just burn sun".

土圭

Already 2500 years ago, during the Period of Springs and Autumns (from 772 to 481 BC), China observed the sun with the tǔ guī and measured the winter solstice. Tǔ guī is the oldest measuring instrument of time, it is a simple pole erected on the ground to observe the projection of the shadow of the sun, through the rules of the movement and the length of the shadows, the time of the winter solstice and that of summer's was established.

On that day the sun reaches 270 ° longitude, the direct sunlight reaches the ground position of the southernmost tip of the year, the sun is almost direct to the Tropic of Capricorn (also known as the winter solstice line) . The northern hemisphere is more prone to the sun. Therefore, the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year throughout the northern hemisphere and is the shortest day at the most northern position. In the north of the Arctic Circle the sun stays all day under the horizon, and becomes the polar night of the northern hemisphere, the longest. For all parts of the northern hemisphere, the solstice is also the day when the sun at noon is at the lowest level. In the Beijing district the daylight lasts only 9 hours and 20 minutes while the height of the sun at noon does not exceed 26 ° 42 '. On that day, in the northern hemisphere, there is a minimum of solar radiation, about 50% less than in the southern hemisphere. After the winter solstice, the stars of the night sky are completely replaced by the winter sky.

Interestingly, winter in the northern hemisphere is slightly longer than summer because the Earth is a little closer to the Sun and flows slightly faster. When the sun directs the southern hemisphere its course is shorter than the northern hemisphere of about eight days. As a result, summer is slightly shorter than winter.

The winter solstice as a party was in force during the Han dynasty, flourished in the Tang and Song dynasties. That day we they did not work in the fields and the troops along the borders were on standby, all the activities stopped for a day. Friends and relatives made visits to each other, happy to live a day of "peace of mind". After the Song dynasty, the winter solstice became the day dedicated to the worship of ancestors and the feasts of the gods. Now only Chaoshan, part of the Zhejiang region still continues to revere the old habits.

During the winter solstice the day receives the least amount of solar radiation in the northern hemisphere, about 50% less than the southern hemisphere. However, it is not the coldest time, because the surface of the earth contains both air that water and is able to store heat. After the winter solstice, even if the angle of the sun is getting higher and higher, it is a slow process of recovery. The amount of heat dissipated every day is even greater than the amount of heat that is received, giving rise to the phenomenon 入不敷出 "rùbùfūchū" (despite all the efforts we can not see the light at the end of the tunnel).
