Le origini della Festa di Metà Autunno si perdono nella mitologia.
Si narra che un giorno nel
cielo apparvero dieci soli. La gente sulla terra non riusciva più
sopportare il caldo e
si rivolse all'imperatore Yao (2000 ac). L’imperatore decise allora di
chiamare Hou Yi, il valente arciere, ordinandogli di colpire nove soli.
Egli infatti ne lasciò uno solo. In seguito Hou Yi divenne un tiranno e
rubò l'elisir dell'immortalità dalla Regina Madre
d’Occidente. La bellissima Chang 'E, sua moglie, a sua volta glielo rubò
per salvare la popolazione dalla tirannia di Hou Yi e, appena bevutolo,
la gravità non ebbe più effetto su di lei. Così lei volò sulla Luna.
