La Giornata degli insegnanti mira ad affermare il contributo degli insegnanti alla causa dell'educazione. Nella storia cinese moderna e contemporanea sono state usate diverse date. Nel 1985 la nona riunione del Comitato permanente del Sesto Congresso nazionale del popolo approvò la mozione del Consiglio di Stato sull'istituzione della Giornata degli insegnanti, confermando la data del 10 settembre.

In Hong Kong, during the Teachers' Day, a ceremony is held to honor prominent teachers and a unified greeting card is printed which students can receive for free. On September 10th each year the Hong Kong Mentoring Sports Committee holds the "Teacher's Day Presentation Ceremony". The ceremony is performed by the student band as a live accompaniment.
