Doppio Sette / Double Seventh Festival

Double Seven Festival is a traditional Chinese folk festival, known under various names: Feast of the Seven Night, Feast of Intelligence, Feast of the Seven Sisters, Feast of Female Daughters, Feast of Appeal for Skill, Feast of Seven Mothers, Feast of Qixi Sacrifice, Feast of Cows and Bulls, etc.

The Qixi Festival is derived from the worship of stars. It is the birthday of the Seven Sisters in the traditional sense. Because the worship of the "Seven Sisters" is held on the seventh night of the seventh month, it is named "Qixi" (The night of the Seven).

The festival is dedicated to praying for blessings, making wishes, begging for intelligence and skill. We sit down to look at the stars Altair and Vega to pray for a good marriage. The Qixi Festival is therefore not only an occasion for the adoration of the Seven Sisters, but it is also the feast of love. Nowadays it corresponds to the Chinese Valentine's Day.

According to legend, the Shepherd and the Weaver Girl will meet in the sky on the Magpie Bridge every year on the seventh day of the seventh month. As the legend goes, it was the magpies that built a bridge over the Milky Way to allow the Shepherd to the Weaver Girl to meet. The rain of the Qixi Festival was their tears. It is a metaphor for the lovers' desire to reunite after a long absence.

The Qixi Festival began in ancient times, became popular during the Western Han Dynasty, and flourished during the Song Dynasty. In ancient times, the Qixi Festival was an exclusive festival for beautiful girls. Among the many popular customs of the Qixi Festival, some have gradually disappeared, but a considerable part has been cultivated to this day.

The Qixi Festival originated in China but some Asian countries, influenced by Chinese culture, such as Japan, the Korean Peninsula and Vietnam, cultivate the tradition of celebrating the Qixi Festival.

On May 20, 2006, the Qixi Festival was included in the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List by the State Council of the People's Republic of China.
