Solstizio d'Estate / Summer Solstice

The summer solstice is one of the 24 solar terms. On the summer solstice, the sun runs to 90 degrees in the Yellow Sutra (currently in Gemini). The the sun is directed to the earth on the northernmost point of the year, almost directly to the Tropic of Cancer. At this time, the daytime in the northern hemisphere reaches the peak of the year. For the Tropic of Cancer and its northern region, the summer solstice is also the day when the sun is at the highest point at noon, of the year. In the Beijing area, the summer solstice can be as long as 15 hours. At noon, the height of the sun is as high as 73°32′. The solar radiation obtained in the northern hemisphere of this day is the most, nearly double that of the southern hemisphere.

Astronomical experts said that the summer solstice is the turning point of the sun. After this day, it will take a "back road," and the direct sunlight point will begin to move southwards from the Tropic of Cancer. The daylight in the northern hemisphere will be shortened day by day. After the summer solstice, the height of the sun at the noon began to decrease day by day on the Tropic of Cancer and its area north of the tropics. At the same time, after the arrival of the summer solstice, the stars in the night sky gradually turn into a summer sky.

The summer solstice is the “méi rain” season in the Jianghuai area. At this time, it is during the yellow ripening period of the Jiangnan plums ( méi) . The air is very humid. The cold and warm air masses meet here and form a trough of low pressure, leading to continuous rainy weather. In such weather, the objects are moldy and the human body feels uncomfortable. Some mosquitoes reproduce rapidly, and some intestinal bacteria are easy to breed. At this time, we must pay attention to the health of drinking water and try not to eat cold food to prevent the occurrence and spread of infectious diseases.
